    Athletes gunning for promotion

ENFIELD & Haringey AC men's B team romped to victory on Saturday in the Southern Men's League Division 2 match at Hemel Hempstead.

With a home match to come at the Lee Valley Athletic Centre on May 17, the team looks set to consolidate a healthy lead in a bid to secure one of the five promotion spots in the 25-club division.

Zak Saucede led the way with a win in the opening track event by running a lifetime best in the 400m Hurdles (54.1) for the second time in six days.

This was followed by four more track wins: Ben Nagy took the 800m in a personal best of 1:58.8, Jurg Van Der Walt sped round the 5000m in 15:33.2, Andre Laidley came out top in the 200m with the excellent time of 22.8 and 17-year-old Ramone Martinez-Rodney ran 4:16.5 for the 1500m.

Showing great determination, Shaun Collins, running as a non-scorer, led the 3000m steeplechase from the gun to lap every competitor, passing the second-placed runner with 200m to go, and notched up a new personal best of 9:26.8 by two seconds, improving his time of two weeks previous by nine seconds, and consolidated his number one position in the national U20 rankings.

The EHAC men notched up several victories in the B strings as well, Laidley taking the 100m in 11.2, with Omari Barton-Ellington emphsising the club's strength by winning the non-scoring 100m in an identical time.

The B string 200m was taken by Sam Franklin-Jones who duplicated the A string winning time with his 22.8. Again the non-scoring race was a parade event for EHAC, Michael Otubambo taking it with a 23.1 clocking.

The B 400 saw David Montgomery come home in 53.2 from non-scoring Chris Symonds (54.4). Neil Brennan completed an EHAC double in the 800m with his 1:58.5 winning time and Symonds again notched up a non-scoring win with 1:58.0.

Still flying the club flag in the B events, Dan Christian made a return to racing by claiming the 1500m second string race in 4:25.8. Joel Hopkins also made a return to racing when he took the B 400m in 59.3 after a year out of the sport.

Chris Baker won his specialist high jump event with a 1.95m clearance and Alwyn Lombaard cleared 1.80 to win the B competition, but Mark Crowley out-jumped both of them with his two-metre jump to win the non-scoring event.

Baker also ran 16.2 to win the B 110mH race.

Showing good versatility, Lucas Zambrzyki won both the pole vault (4.00m) and then the B discus (37.27).

    Enfield & Haringey took both relays, the 4 x 100m in 45.0 and the 4 x 400 in 3:39.8.
