Smell the flowers for a good cause

Open Gardens, Muswell Hill, June 28 and 29.

Since 1927 under the National Gardens Scheme, beautiful and interesting private gardens have opened their gates to raise money for nursing, caring and gardening charities.

The garden of Susan Bennett and her husband Earl Hyde at 5 St Regis Close, Alexandra Park Road, will open on June 29, from 2pm to 7pm, offering homemade teas and a plant sale. The garden boasts a pagoda, baroque temple and gothic shed.

It was chosen by Maureen Lipman as her favourite garden for the Museum of Garden History, and featured in ITV's Britain's Best Gardens. Entry costs £2.50 (children free).

That day, garden designer Ben Loftus will also open his garden at 5, Cecil Road, Muswell Hill, from 2pm to 5.30pm. Entry costs £2.50 (children free).

On June 28 and 29, the garden at 27, Wood Vale, Muswell Hill, will open from 1.30pm to 6pm, with teas, a plant sale and plenty to entertain children. Entry costs £2.50 (children 50p, under-fives free).
