Labour MPs who didn't show up to vote for a Conservative motion to halt the post office closures have been accused of letting down their constituents.

The motion, debated in Parliament on Wednesday, failed by just 20 votes.

Shadow business secretary Alan Duncan said: "The hunt will now be on for all those Labour MPs who have pretended to support their local post office and then done a runner when they had a chance to make a real difference."

Tottenham MP David Lammy, who has been campaigning to save the post offices in his constituency, was one of the Labour MPs who did not show up for the vote.

A spokesperson for Mr Lammy said he had been called to a speaking engagement outside London but insisted he remained committed to opposing the closures in Tottenham.

Liberal Democrat Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, voted in favour of the motion.

If Alan Duncan is going to hunt down MPs who failed to vote against Post Office closures, he could start with his own party leader - because David Cameron didn't take part in the vote either, which doesn't say much for how committed the Conservatives really are to saving our post offices.

Not only was David Lammy aviod the Post Office vote. I emailed him over a month ago, and have as yet received no reply to from him. This will be another less vote for him, plus I will encourage others likewise.

I heard Mr Lammy missed the vote as he was on compassionate leave following the death of his mother so I'll reserve my judgement.

David Lammy is an absolutely terrible MP. I myself have written to him previously, he does not even reply!! Shame HIS SEAT IS SO SAFE AS IT WOULD BE GREAT TO HAVE AN MP THAT ACTUALLY CARED ABOUT TOTTENHAM
