Trees in Finsbury Park are being destroyed by dogs whose owners are using the space as a training ground for dog fights.

Nearly 100 trees have been damaged by dogs encouraged by their owners to chew and scratch on the bark.

The practice strengthens their jaws and claws in preparation for fights.

It is estimated at least 20 trees will have to be removed.

Councillor Dhiren Basu, cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning, said: "Dog fighting is a barbaric sport that belongs in the dark ages, but also the training methods involved are ruining the appearance of a beautiful park.

"An enormous amount of time and effort has been spent in making Finsbury Park one of the best open spaces in the country.

"We can't allow all of this to be placed at risk by the actions of a few cruel and misguided individuals who want to train their dogs to fight."

A number of park-goers have also reported witnessing dog fights near the softball area.

The council is now urging dog owners to act responsibly and abandon the vicious sport, warning that anyone found to be involved will be prosecuted.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said: "Unfortunately using trees to prepare dogs for fighting is not uncommon.

"What we are pleased about is the shift of focus from dangerous dogs to irresponsible owners.

"Any dog can be trained to be aggressive just as they can be trained to be marvellous pets.

"The issue is that dog owners must be more responsible."
