TOTTENHAM have been threatened with legal action by Manchester United over the Dimitar Berbatov tap-up storm according to media reports.

The News of the World claim United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to go to war with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy after he accused him of arrogance and hypocrisy in making an alleged illegal approach for the Bulgarian striker.

The paper also claims that the Premier League champions will ignore Levy’s attack and remain confident of getting Berbatov with an improved £25million bid.

And Ferguson has hit-out at Levy's claims about taking him to court, over claims he said he was going to sign the forward.

He said: “It is going to look embarrassing for Tottenham. They based their complaint on a newspaper story and I don’t know where those comments came from. They certainly didn’t come from me.

“But you know what Daniel Levy is like. He is different.

“I have not read the full article but I have been given the gist of it by our Press officer. I am sure our legal people will be looking at it.”

But Tottenham continue to claim Ferguson did make references to signing Berbatov.

And last night a Spurs spokesperson said: “With regard to United, we have confirmed comments came from Sir Alex talking at a supporters’ meeting.

“Our evidence will be submitted to the Premier League, all checked by our lawyers. We would not have said what we said without substantial evidence.

“And it is worth asking Alex Ferguson if he is happy to confirm that at no point has anyone from Old Trafford ever spoken to the player or his agent given that Tottenham has never given permission.”
